The Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Punta Princesa is considered to be among the most progressive parishes in Cebu City . Through the years, it is elemental in the development of the community where it belongs – spreading love and devotion to the Blessed Mother and improving the quality of people’s lives through their youth-oriented projects, educational programs, and livelihood plans.

In the 1930s, Don Pablo Atillo (a member of the well-known clan in Cebu ), brought an image of Our Lady of Lourdes to his home. Their family was recognized to be very religious and they wanted to share their faith to the neighborhood. A chapel was built and became open to those who wanted to pay reverence to the Virgin Mother.

As time went on, the population of devotees grew, so a church made of light materials was built. On January 27, 1957, the small church became officially and canonically established as Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Its first parish priest was Reverend Fr. Peter John Clifford, SDB (Salesians of Don Bosco). Extensive fund-raising activities were organized for the construction of a concrete church. True, in 1970, an 18 meter-high concrete parabolic shell of the church stood proud amongst the parishioners. Later, a huge grotto was built, a replica of what is found in Our Lady of Lourdes, France where the Blessed Virgin appeared to a young girl Bernadette Subirous.

During the 50th year anniversary celebration (2007) of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes called Lourdes@50, it has recounted how it lived its golden years helping the society, the youth, the families not only spiritually but also socially. It also launched more projects to succeed in their mission of making Lourdes in Punta, the center for Marian Devotion in the Philippines . This has been made possible in the cooperation of the parishioners, the leadership of the parish priests and pastoral council, and ultimately in the faith in Divine Providence.
