Balay sa Agta: Largest Cave in Cebu
2Considered to be the largest cave in Cebu is the Balay sa Agta Cave located in Barangay Conalum, Argao. It is said that the cave, which is surrounded by the lush greenery Argao Lantoy National Park, is very huge that it could accommodate two building structures as big as the St. Michael Parish church.

Balay sa Agta: “balay” is the Cebuano term for house while “agta” is a mythical creature described to be extraordinarily tall, brown and hairy. The name for the cave then is such because of the cave’s enormous size fit to be the agta’s house. According to Filipino folklores, the agta smokes a big tobacco pipe.
Though it literally means House of the Agta, the cave is also home to different species of birds and bats. Recently, strange snakelike creatures that some people call flying rods have drawn tourists to pay a visit to the wonderful cave.

Barangay Conalum is 40 minutes away from Poblacion Argao (which is two hours away from Cebu City). The mountainous barangay could be reached using a motorcycle called “habal-habal” although four-wheel vehicles may also be used. With its 7 chambers, some are not yet explored; the Balay sa Agta Cave is a destination for those who want a real taste of adventure.
