Street Treats of Cebu Part 1
Street Treats of Cebu Part 1
Cebu does not only boast beautiful places, beaches and great people but also when it comes to chows or snacks usually sold on the streets. Oh yes, you heard it right. These street treats can be categorized as Cebu’s premiere fast food, only cheaper and you can eat it anywhere and anytime you want.
Tahó
Firs of, let’s start with the Cebu breakfast treat; the tahó. This is also known as the Cebuano version of tofu. You’ll recognize one when you hear a yell that says; “tahooooo!!!” early in the morning. The three main ingredients are the Cebuano tofu itself, a syrup and sago (tiny balls that I think made of gelatin). I usually feel nostalgic when I eat one since it brings me back to my early days. continue reading » »
Cebu’s Lechon
Cebu’s Lechon
If it’s all about food we’re going to talk about, then Cebu is a no-stranger when it comes to that topic. Cebu is not only famous for its stunning beaches, beautiful landscapes and great people perfectly blended by the modernization, but also for food uniqueness; the lechon, or roast. There are actually three kinds of lechon: the lechon baboy (roasted pig), lechon manok (chicken) and the quite rare lechon baka (roasted cow). The lechon baka is relatively rare since, rather than the whole cow, the hind leg/s is the only part available.
In Cebu, and in some parts of the Philippines, the default name of “lechon” is branded on the whole-roasted pig since it is mostly the first choice to be order in several major occasions like weddings, feasts and birthdays. Today, the places of Carcar and Talisay are considered the most prominent lechon producers. Even parties handled by wealthy people in Manila are bound to make orders in Cebu just to get the most delicious and scrumptious lechon. continue reading » »
Cebu’s Ampao
Cebu’s Ampao
I’ve long traveled from the metropolitan Cebu to the southern or northern most part of the Cebu province. Every time the bus makes a stop, vendors that sell peanuts, mangoes, mineral water and others are the first ones to greet the passengers.
Among those for sale is the distinctive white, crunchy and white rice crispies known as ampao. This rectangular-shaped and thick layered crunchy treat requires you to open your mouth really wide or else you’ll sprinkle those tiny fragments on the ground or on your lap while you’re sitting. Of course, with its sweet taste, ants are more likely to collect those tiny pieces. continue reading » »
Pusô
A meal with pusô
One thing that I know about the subject of pusô is the use of coconut leaves wrapped around the cooked rice and shaped in a “3D” diamond form. It’s actually one of the interesting things that Cebuanos have for years. I wouldn’t know about its history except the Tagalog term of puso, which means “heart”. I had hours of thinking about how to connect the dots, but to no avail. Nevertheless, it never fails to capture the hearts of Cebuanos whenever they “connect” the pusô to their favorite barbecue and other dishes. continue reading » »
Dessert Factory
Location: Ayala Center Cebu
One thing that Ayala Center-Cebu have is the, of course, they provide the classy and sophisticated setting in which some of the Cebuanos spend their time with their family, especially dining.
One of the most splendid restaurants, that I’ve been able to dine at least 10 times or more, is Dessert Factory. This is the place where my girlfriend can find the luscious cakes, ice cream and a combination of both. There are also cookies that are cooked so right that you would like to simply eat them all like there’s no tomorrow. Plus, a variety of drinks are available for you to choose from and my favorite is the Lassi yoghurt drink, which gives me enough satisfaction that I am indeed full after a great meal. continue reading » »
Table 7
Location: Lagoon Area of Ayala Center Cebu
First off, you may wonder a bit about what fusion cuisine/food is all about. Some people would think that it is the art of food; some would find it the creativity of food preparation that instills a little bit of blending at least two or three food cultures from any place of the planet. Actually, I researched a little bit about it and found out that those descriptions are true. Would it be nice to put a little bit of Carribean style with a sprinkle of Middle East ingredients and South American menus into something out of the ordinary special plate? Now, that’s way out of the ordinary. continue reading » »
Sunburst Fried Chicken SM
We usually dine at Sunburst specially after a along exhausting spree at the mall. Sounds like spending millions huh. I have not tried their other food offerings as we usually ask for the chicken Sunduo and Solo. These are chicken combo meals served with some sliced potato usually in three and a coleslaw. The difference between Sundou and Solo is just the number of chicken parts served. Well, you can ask for which part or parts to be served as I usually go for the drumstick and the thigh. continue reading » »
Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the Philippines, and the main center of commerce, trade, education, and industry in the central, and southern parts of the islands. It has five-star hotels, casinos, white sand beaches, world-class golf courses, convention centers, and shopping malls.- Wikipedia
