Casa Gorordo Museum

Casa Gorordo Museum
Cebu prides itself on many things, from the undeniable talents of musicians and artists that came from Cebu, to the its spectacular festivals. But one thing that you can’t deny from the locals is the fact that they keep sacred their culture and heritage. To see what Cebu was like in the past, one of the main tourist attractions to visit would be the Casa Gorordo Museum. continue reading » »
Mooon Café: a comprehensive review (part 2)
Mooon Cafe: a comprehensive review (part 2)
Food
Other than the Mexican-themed environment, the food is absolutely fantastic. As expected for one of the finest restaurants in Cebu, Mooon Café has inscribed Mexican food in the minds of Cebuanos and customers who dine here. There were actually a lot to choose from, particularly the well-liked Mooonsteak, which is Mooon Café’s version on how to lovingly pour the excellently-cooked pork steak with its lusciously delectable sauce. Other than that, I was enticed to know how the Fish Fillet with Mozzarella tastes like and it was indeed lovely. Other dishes that I’ve tried were the Beef Stroganoff, Karnes Pizza, Quesadillas and the ever-appetizing Mexican baby back ribs. continue reading » »
Darras+Bowler: Fine Wine in Cebu
Darras+Bowler: Fine Wine in Cebu
For quite some time now, the Darras Bowler (or Darras+Bowler) has sat beside the corner of Gov. M.C. Cuenco Avenue in Banilad, Cebu City, drawing a much-needed attention from wine aficionados. I, myself, was able to notice this establishment ever since I enrolled in the University of San Carlos-Technological Center. Never did I know that this is the place to find a several best wines found in the whole world.
Some of the wines that can be found here include the Piedmont, Chianti Barolo, Ruinart Bellefon, Champigny Tolosan Frontonnais, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Matinbrough, Dolcetto Prosecco, Pouilly Fume, Languedoc Fitou, Rhone Gascogne, Veuve Clicquot, among others. continue reading » »
All Souls Day in Cebu

All Souls Day in Cebu
Tomorrow is going to be All Souls Day. This special holiday supports deep meaning than the celebrated Halloween in other nations such as United States of America (USA). I sort of wanted to try out the trick or treat activity and indulge to what could’ve been one of the entertaining events of the year. Malls and other establishments often schedule entertaining activities for the Halloween venture to blend well with the Filipinos’ sentimental approach.
I can remember those years when I was living with my parents. We would light candles in our front yard, doors and windows and prepare a meal for our departed relatives. This is to “welcome the spirits” of those loved ones who have passed away and to preserve the relationship in time perpetuity. This activity is done by those who are far away from the burial grounds of the deceased. As for my family, our buried relatives are in Surigao so, instead of visiting the graves, we just light candles, say prayers for them and invite “them” to join us in our dinner table. continue reading » »
Cebu: A Brief History (Part 2 of 2)
Cebu today
As I’ve mentioned during the past week, Cebu now ranks as the 4th location in business process outsourcing and there’s still more to come. Its 33,000-hectare region is composed of three cities together with the other six municipalities. The population of a million-plus is combined of Filipinos that have Chinese, European and American influences. The long-time vernacular of Bisaya or Cebuano is the prevailing dialect in this region. However, the national language Tagalog and international language, English, is widely spoken.
Understanding the Cebuano culture
Understanding the Cebuano culture
For quite some time now, I have provided you information about some places, establishments and others found in Cebu. Of course, visiting Cebu is out of the question since there are indeed a lot of sights to see that you may want to just stay forever. However, do’s and don’ts are carefully laid out here also.
I, myself, wouldn’t want to just screw around in a place where I’m just visiting since there might even be laws or regulations that are needed for visitors to comply. But I’m not going to talk about acts, decrees or commandments here. I’m just going to let you know about some important concerns that will be able to help you in absorbing insights about the local place of Cebu, and of course the whole Filipino culture as well. continue reading » »
USS Cebu
I bet you did not know that there was once a US battle ship named after Cebu during World War II. USS Cebu (ARG-6), an internal combustion engine repair ship was commissioned on April 15, 1944 under Captain G. W. Scott. USS Cebu was once stationed at Manus, Admiralty Islands from September 10, 1944 and help prepare ships for the assaults on Leyte, Luzon and later Iwo Jima. It was moved to Ulithi on January 22, 1945 and then to San Pedro Bay, Cebu. I do not know where this particular place now. Anyway, USS Cebu was specially busy repairing ships hit by Kamikazee planes. In one occasion USS Cebu was showered with burning debris when a nearby ammunition ship was hit and exploded.
I guess there are a lot of historical facts relating to Cebu that have long been forgotten or we just simply neglect. I have only learned about this when when I saw an Ebay posting of pictures about USS Cebu at the Ebay Items section of this site. Somebody or someone from the government perhaps should bid for these photographs for history sake and for the next Cebuano generation to come. We should never forget what our history has taught us.
