When you talk about Cebu City, the Filipino locals think of one thing and that’s the Sinulog festival. Every time January comes around, people from all parts of the country would be asking those whom they know are in Cebu about the upcoming festival, i.e. when is it going to be, what specific date, what to expect during the festival et cetera.
What everyone needs to know about the festival is that it happens on the third Sunday of January all the time. Usually the festival always falls on a hot humid day, making it convenient for tourists and locals alike to walk around, since the local transportation system is useless during this day. Cebu City is usually congested with people during the festival day itself and people can only walk.
The festival is held in the honor of the holy image of the Señor Santo Niño de Cebu or the Holy Child Jesus, which is housed in the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The festival is also known as Fiesta Señor, which is known to be the most celebrated among Cebu’s festivals where people come together along the route of a grand procession and participate in the fun among the Mardi Gras parade full of vivid colors and loud drums of the Pit Señor.
