Totally Cebu

The 6-string is mostly the most used instrument among all other musical instruments. I can say this since most people that I know knows how to play it well. And when it comes to guitars, the island of Cebu is not stranger.

Cebu is actually famous when it comes to hand-crafted guitars. This, I didn’t realize until a few years ago. You see, I normally get spontaneous urges that I can’t control, and since, like I mentioned earlier, there are a plenty of people who knows how to play it. And I decided to learn how to play the guitar.

So in my search for self-help guitar books and instrument, I visited the stores in Mactan, Cebu; the heart of hand-crafted guitars. Here lies a line of guitar makers all in different sizes, shapes, designs and colors. They ranged from the colorful to all beautifully polished and intricately designed ones. It’s actually great to see how they make it.

I spent aobut an hour trying to choose which guitar is right for me since I value the design so much. I held several of them. I listed for the tuning (even if I was only pretending to know what I was looking for). I even tried to see how each size would suit me… and then I finally found the right guitar. It was a pretty big guitar that was painted in a deep blue slowly fading into a light blue color from the outside in. there was a simple, yet tribal pattern surrounding the “center hole” of the guitar and its edges. I loved it.

To my amazement, this beautiful guitar came with two great benefits. Not only it was inexpensive, but it also came with an information card where it was made so that they repair any future damages. That made the beautifully hand-crafted instrument even more worthwhile.

Although I spent about a month trying to learn the guitar, I still have the instrument to look at with appreciation. I had to stop trying to play it because it’s actually painful on my fingertips. The very few chords that I learned to memorize still sounds just as nice… because of Cebu’s great talent of guitar makers.
