Cebu Press Freedom Week
Cebu Press Freedom Week
This week celebrates the 13th annual Cebu Press Freedom Week. The celebration began at 6:00 am on Sunday with a colorful and exciting dance parade that started in the grounds of Cebu City Hall and ended at the Capitol Building. The parade consisted of Cebu’s three dailies—Sun.Star, Cebu Daily News and The Freeman along with the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.
The Holy Mass held at the Social Hall was then followed by the President of the Catholic Educational of the Philippines Association, Fr. Roderick Salazar, Jr. He preached about the importance of remaining true, fair, objective and un-bias to the media practitioners despite of the difficulties they may encounter. As we know, being in the media means being exposed to all…and that can be quite risky especially with the news you are going to share. Several people have been threatened, hurt and even killed because of the news they have reported or sought after. But the celebration of Cebu Press Freedom Week still prevailed and allowed our local media practitioners to have fun.
The Sunday celebration of Cebu Press Freedom week consisted of the amazing dance parade where The Freeman was awarded the “Star of the Parade” award for the dance parade. Sun.Star took first place for its Top Ten Hits number along with the P10,000 cash prize. Cebu Daily News made their mark and took the runner up position with their belly dancing production number. Along with the 2nd place standing, they received the cash prize of P7,000. The Freeman trailed in 3rd place, but the KBP ended last in the competition. In the media beauty competition, The Freeman’s Rachelle Marie Dangin was officially crowned this years Miss Press Freedom. The entire week only promises more fun, games, exhibits and lectures for our brave Cebu local media practitioners with the Cebu Press Freedom Week celebration.
