Cebu Schools: University of the Visayas
Other than dominating Cebu’s collegiate basketball league, Cebu Schools Athletic Foudnation Inc., CESAFI, with its talented basketball team Green Lancers, the University of Visayas is no stranger to college education. For years, they have been able to provide a large number of graduates as well as professionals that have learned through years in the UV building. I, myself, was able to visit their building in Colon, Cebu, and I find it indeed spectacular.
Established in the year 1919 and was known as Visayan Institute by then, its known philosophy of “amor servitum humanitas” serves as developing of love, leadership and service. Of course, schools have their mission and vision for that effective education but the University of Visayas caters more to those less-fortunate ones who deserve a shot in schooling. I’m not saying that the other schools take for granted the deprived; I’m saying that the University of the Visayas is just dedicated to promote that chance.
The University of the Visayas already has five accredited programs approved by the Philippine Association of College and Universities-Commission on Accreditation, which are: Commerce, Maritime Programs (Level II), Arts and Sciences, Nursing and Education (Level III). Back in October 1998, the university made a claim for the ISO 9001 certification. Also in February 1999, their system manuals made of quality was approved for documentary review.
Study-now-pay-later program
The University of the Visayas engineered the first-ever study-now-pay-later concept back in 1965-1975. This is a program where poor Cebuanos but deserving ones are given the chance to have education and make a better life. For years, it gave deserving opportunities to those who are not fortunate enough to have an education. Vicente Gullas succeeded the whole concept, wherein, the last five years, ordinary government employees have been given benefits as well as their public school teachers, military dependents, administrators and personnel. This later punctuated to an eye-popping sum of P8.5million each semester.
Public Employment Office
Recently, the University of the Visayas institutionalized their version of public employment office (PESO). This is a program where the university provides assignment and job training to those UV students who have graduated as well as graduates from other educational institutions. Since PESO’s debut, the University of Visayas was able to employ up to more than 1000 applicants.
