Dried Mango and Otap
The Cebu Dried Mangoes
The first time I tried dried mangoes was when I was just a toddler. Back then I didn’t know what it was until I tried it and found it to be one of the tastiest treats I ever snacked on. Ever since that moment, it got stuck to my taste bud’s memory as a tasty, chewy and unique savor of mango and it became one of my favorite nibble snacks. After all, this could be also one of the best choices for health-conscious people since it is rich in Vitamin C and Vitamins B1, B2 and B3. Of course, I wouldn’t be talking deeper about how nutritious this treat is but all I know is that it can be a great substitution to the old junk food and potato chips eat feast.
It feels great to have a product like this that belongs to our own country, the Philippines, especially for the Cebu community since this product is considered by many as one of the most best-tasting and appetizing dried mangoes ever produced by the country, if not the whole world. It’s always great to know when people from outside of Cebu, and even abroad, wants to take a full-load of dried mangoes for their family and friends back at home.
I never get to know the history of dried mangoes and how it is made but all I know is that it grows easily when you are living in a warm climate. And for years, mango trees have been sprouting all over every island of the Philippines and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone gets to pull out another idea into how mangoes can be developed into food products. But, for now, the Cebu dried mangoes are the best there is.
For now, I’m still doing my work so I’m gonna get this over with and head to the nearest grocery store to buy a bag-full of dried mangoes to satisfy my long-awaited cravings.
Otap as part of Cebu’s history
Ever since I took my first step in Cebu back in 1990, the oval-shaped biscuit known as otap became one of my first top answers I have in mind if someone asks me to give out what food product Cebu has to offer. Combinations of flour, coconut, shortening and the ever-sweet sugar make it one of the most distinctive treats in Cebu.
This puff pastry product of Cebu is considered to be a “fragile” food because once you carelessly bite it you are inviting a bucket-full of ants that are happy enough to gather all those sugar bits. However, this wouldn’t be the ultimate downside to it. It is simply a matter of how and where you eat and to place one hand under your chin so you can catch the tiny pieces from falling to the ground.
I, on the other hand, simply munch it from its food wrapper in a careful way. It would be great for you to try otap yourself and discover how tasty it is as well as how you should be able to keep it in your mouth without breaking it apart.
Anyway, enough with the whole eating thing, I’m actually wanting to try it out myself once again and to keep things in a not-so-fragile way. I’ll be off to Titay’s store, which is located in Lilo-an, Cebu, to taste their specialized otap with their unique flavoring.
