Family Park

Aug 29th, 2007 by infinity | 0

Location: Talamban, Cebu City

D’Family Park in Talamban provides a unique environment for the locals. Not many places in Cebu can be considered a complete family place unlike this sizeable park. I have lived in the Talamban area for years now, but it wasn’t until recently that I grew to appreciate the park.

For those who like the physical activity of hiking, you can simply take a short trek into the park. If you’re an active person, you may like the uphill battle your legs will face. The walk may take about five to ten minutes depending on your pace. While walking, you can enjoy the tropical environment around you. On the left, as you approach the enormous field, you will encounter a small zoo. Then the excitement begins…

Well, let me tell you first about the field itself. Normally, especially on Sundays, it is packed with hundreds of people. Families come to the park for family bonding, picnics and entertainment. Kids of all ages are running around playing games like badminton and tagging while the adults play volleyball. For the younger kids who require supervision from parents or relatives, they occupy the swings, slides, teeter-tauters and monkey bars, which are strategically6 placed near the picnic areas. Going into this amazingly huge field with hundreds of people will only make you realize how packed the city of Cebu is.

If you are not much of a people-person, you can wander off to the small zoo nearby. The small zoo will allow you to view several types of animals including the endangered Philippine brown deer. Inside the smaller cages are monkeys, a large python, some other endangered kinds and others. Having gone with my girlfriend to D’Family Park, I was stuck for almost half an hour in the rabbit area since she really wanted to get one of those cuddly creatures. The rabbit area is the only area where you can pet the animals.

Right next to the small zoo is a cozy little “sitting area’, where you can spend your time talking to your loved one or simply watch people enjoying and minding their own business. Also, the trees are all over the benches, which is a matter of “protecting” the entire area away from the busiest parts.

If that doesn’t appeal to your idea of fun, you can take a dip in the public pool for a small fee. This is particularly cooling during the hot and humid summer days.

After your day at D’Family Park, your walk back down to the exit will be a relaxing one. The best perk would be the vendors outside waiting to sell you their sweet or sour mangoes. This would be the “cherry on top” to end your day. After all, this is not about the park itself but the amount of time spent that Filipino families have in common.
