Greenpeace in Cebu
Global warming, air and water pollution, illegal fishing and whaling are just some of the issues that the world organization of Greenpeace concentrates at. The non-governmental organization (NGO) Greenpeace has paced itself into the center of nonviolent yet direct action to fight off ecological abuse, mistreatment and destruction.
Neglecting such goal is never in the minds of Greenpeace members as well as independency from authorities, corporations and governments. Greenpeace simply rely on its volunteers to carry that notion into full realization and to act on environmental issues. Of course, hazardous technologies and practices is now included in the pursuit for environmental safety and wellbeing. Finally, in 2000, Greenpeace opened its regional office in Southeast Asia.

On September 21, 2007, Greenpeace extended root in Cebu, Philippines. Following the accomplishment of this year’s global “Live Earth: SOS Concert for a Climate in Crisis” held on July 7, Greenpeace Southeast Asia team met with some of the Cebuano organizers of “Earth Calling Cebu-7.707-a Concert for a Climate in Crisis.
Right after the talks, the launching of Greenpeace Cebu formed a core group of 12 members to headline environmental activities here in Cebu as well as look for new volunteers.
The launching at the Outpost restaurant located in Lahug, Cebu featured the Bike4UFoundataion, another NGO that gives free bicycles to deserving students as well as bands to headline the July 7 event. The “Simple lang” (Just simple) campaign was induced on that day while some provincial and city officials discussed about several environmental programs for Cebu.
Roy Lumagbas, coordinator of Greenpeace Cebu, described the “Simple lang” campaign as a catalyst to encouraging Cebuanos to go for small, but doable, amounts of contribution to environmental preservation. Some of these environmental activities that Cebuanos can throw in are limiting of electricity consumption, water conservation and proper garbage disposal. These may be clichés of environmental safeguarding but are also the most concerns that are often taken for granted.
