Cebu is no puny when it comes to medical care as well as the sophisticated facilities that can indeed qualify as one of the best. Actually, the big three hospitals that I’m about to mention are not just the best in Cebu, but can be also considered as one of the best in the Philippines as well as achieving the world-class mark. The Cebu Doctors Hospital, Chong Hua Medical Hospital and Perpetual Soccour Hospital are simply at its best in terms of quality medical service, facilities and, of course, attentiveness and accuracy.
These hospitals in Cebu are considered by the Cebuanos themselves to have reached that peak into providing advanced medical services not only with the medical instruments but also the doctors that prove to be the best in the league.
Chong Hua Hospital
IN this first part, I’m going to talk about the most-heard of and reputable hospital in Cebu; Chong Hua Hospital. This establishment started, actually, as a Chinese-owned modern building for the Chinese community known as Associacion Benevola de Cebu. It simply evolved into a major hospital that caters to not only the Chinese community in Cebu but also the Cebuanos.
Chong Hua Hospital is located right beside Fuente Osmeña Boulevard and if you can simply raise your head above the eye-view, you can already see the towering building with the huge “Chong Hua Hospital” on it. Actually, there is a new building built recently and I decided to pay a visit to see how great the “feel” of the inside compared to the old one. I actually found it one-of-a-kind, it is impressively embellished with an ample amount of green glass flavored with dark wood paneling and a seemingly refreshing vibe of the whole interior.
The core group of Chong Hua Hospital may have decided to expand a little bit and spend a hefty amount to cater their patients’ needs. State-of-the-art equipments, advanced ultrasound machines and other medical equipments are just some of its upgrade. I even heard that they now have a sleep-disorder lab and that’s an absolutely good news to Cebuanos who have trouble sleeping out there, who have been suffering for quite some time now. And, of course, most of the standout doctors of Cebu are in Chong Hua Hospital to help aid the ill-stricken Cebuanos. Surgeons, neurologists, pharmacists and others are just some of Chong Hua’s crew in helping the Cebuanos in their medical needs.

I grow up having the best hospital care. That’s why it dread me having had to experience the worst healthcare service in what they call the best hospital in CEBU CITY.
My husband got sick when we had a vacation last week. He was diagnosed with amoebiasis, and we decided to admit him in Chong Hua Hospital since this is one the hospitals accredited by his health insurance.
ADMISSION DILLEMMA
Admission alone took a lot of time. He was already there around 4:30pm, but was transferred to his room at 7pm. The problem? It took sometime for the HMO to respond back to them. Honestly, it’s not our problem. If they can’t contact the HMO, or if they lack the much needed diligence to contact them, they have no choice but to admit us timely. After all, if our HMO won’t answer for our expenses, we will just have to pay for it.
The GUARDS on DUTY Incident
I know each hospital has different processes, different protocols. But there’s one thing that needs to be constant: RESPECT and COURTESY to PATIENTs and FAMILIES. When I got there with my aunt, the 2 guards on duty were very disrespectful, condescending, not to mention, SARCASTIC. I hope I can just say they are just GUARDs, right? But I expect eyebrows to rise again for DISCRIMANATION. But unfortunately, it was us who experienced this to this 2 people. When I requested for a service phone for me to contact my father watching over my husband, instead of declining politely, the guard responded, “wala diay kay cellphone (you don’t have a cellphone?)” You be the judge.
INSULTING STAFF and LAZY NURSES
When my father fetched us, we took the wrong turn to emergency room, and some staffs started shouting at us saying “dili diha padung taas oi. diri oh” with that insulting smirk on their faces. i bet my father was insulted as well that he answered “pasensya na bay ha.. dili man gud mi taga diri”. i don’t think we overreacted. i mean, yes, we were so ignorant not to read the signs and directions, but they just need to refine their words.
Since it was already late when my husband was transferred to his room, they didn’t get to eat dinner. I decided to ask the nurses on duty on his diet so that we can buy his food. When i got in the counter, i saw the nurses in one table, talking to each other. i can’t be sure what they’re talking about, but i was there at the counter, waiting for a nurse to attend to my needs. However, instead of getting up and go to the counter, all of them look at my direction and one nurse asked (as if shouting) “unsa man”. i totally forgot i was in the hospital. i thought i am in a sari-sari store buying something. so, i responded: mam i have a question for room 3**). then she answered, still on her seat “nganu diay?”. haay, i don’t think someone is willing to approach me, so i decided to just shout out my question.
The HUGE PROBLEM: DR. JOHN LI
Those mentioned above are just minors. Read on as I lay down the details of the the worst ATTITUDE we have yet to witness with a DOCTOR.
Our HMO assigned Dr. Rowena Uy to be the the doctor of my husband. But since she’s on leave, Dr. John Li took over. Take note that my husband’s diagnosis is AMOEBIASIS, thus he needs a GASTROENTEROLOGIST. But DR. LI is a NEPHROLOGIST, someone who specializes on KIDNEY PROBLEMS. Yes, it’s noted that they are both INTERNIST, but we have to understand that they have different SPECIALIZATIONS, and we have worked hard for the benefit to deserve the best assistance we can get from our HMO. This is the first strike.
We have never seen Dr. Li for the first day of our confinement. But it’s ok. We were attended by good resident doctors. Thank GOD! My husband got confined around 4:30pm on Saturday afternoon, and that Sunday afternoon, Dr. Canales, a resident doctor, informed him that he can be discharged the next day. True enough, my husband requested his discharge first thing the next morning. He stood up to prepare his stuffs while waiting clearance from the his attending doctor. But instead of the clearance, Dr. Li showed up surprisingly in the room, and with his finger pointed to my husband (quite mad?!)
“nganung nitindog man ka? nganung magpadischarge man ka? tan awa gani na imong dila. dehydrated pa man ka. matumba gani ka!”
i sure hope to remember verbatim the words he said, but it’s quite harsh and again, condescending. my husband got mad as well that he responded back unpleasantly.
here are some points i need to raise during the discussion with this FRIENDLY doctor:
1. according to dr. li, he saw amoeba cysts in my husband’s stool. these were not seen by the other doctors. and according to him, his “assistants” gave the WRONG MEDICINES.
2. When my husband asked how he got the cysts, and everything about the sickness, the good doctor just said “hwag mo nang isipin pre. don’t over analyze. just take the medicines na inireseta ko”. i think and i believe, as patients, it’s our right to know everything about our sickness
3. He said that the medicine may not be available in Cebu, and my husband may need to be hospitalized here in manila. Thus my husband insisted to be discharged if there are no medicines available. He said that he’s not keeping my husband for amoebiasis, but for DEHYDRATION. Since my cousin who’s a nurse was there, we had her check my husband. And my husband is not dehydrated. No trace of DEHYDRATION or whatsoever. Isn’t this unnecessary spending?!
3. When a nurse came in for the routinary check, my husband asked for the complete names of his attending doctors (2 residents and the attending doctor). He also mentioned that
after this heated discussion, the GOOD doctor just walked out on us, and never came back. According to some resident doctors, he’s noted for HIS ATTITUDE.
I believe i have laid down some important points regarding this review. According to my mom, who works in a hospital, but not accredited by our HMO, it’s going to be very difficult for us to do an incident report because it has been a hospital’s practice to COVER UP any malpractices. So, i decided to do my CAMPAIGN for JUSTICE in this review.
