Lights on now for Cebu: Fuente Christmas Tree

With 23 days left until Christmas, I still can’t believe that today’s December already. Time flies so fast huh? Well, here in Cebu, the Yuletide season begins its “air” on the month of October, heck even on September. On this month, you can already seen Christmas lights being dangled around the residences, gates, stores, business establishments and others. Of course, there’s also the so-called “advanced Christmas promos” by the malls that makes it official.

But, Christmas in Cebu will not be that official without the lighting of the “brightest” light in the center of the whole metropolis. Recently, the giant Fuente Christmas Tree illuminated towards the celebration of the holidays despite its “uprooting” courtesy of the typhoon Lando back in November 19.

It didn’t affect much since the Fuente Christmas Tree was rebuilt once again by the efforts of the volunteers and, hence, the celebration when Mayor Tomas Osmena switched on the lights to the delight of around 300 spectators. This sparked the Pasko sa Sugbu celebration.

Onlookers cheered as the overwhelming lights of the four-tier Fuente Christmas Tree filled the surrounding along with the lanterns hanging from the trees located within the mini-park and was also followed with a five-minute fireworks display.

The expected completion of the Fuente Christmas Tree is on December 15. It didn’t look like unfinished to me but it’s actually taller than the first one by about 10 feet, totaling up to 130 feet that enhances more the image of the Sto. Nino, the Cebu City patron. Also, the foundation is boosted to at least six feet under to withstand the strong winds.

A lot of the spectators took souvenir photographs posing in front of the huge Fuente Christmas Tree and beside the lighted reindeers displayed at its foot. The reindeer models have been carefully designed to capture its motorized movements and will soom be mounted on the gargantuan Christmas tree.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama also commented that the lighting of the tree was one of the festivities that the program Pasko sa Sugbu is scheduled to release this month.

Some of the events to be held are the street décor contest on the V. Rama Avenue and the lighting of another Christmas tree in Guadalupe Church that will certainly brighten up the streets up until the Sinulog celebration this coming January.
