Calicoan Island- Eastern Samar
When we covered the Calicoan Surfing Crown ‘07 last October, I had several apprehensions - among them, whether my camera zoom lens would be able to get up close to the surfers, the risks involved in shooting while facing the mighty Pacific Ocean winds, and how fast I’d be able to post-process the photos taken.
Calicoan Island - avidly being promoted as the next surfing capital of the Philippines - had its “most important event” of the year which drew local surfing enthusiasts from as far as Baler, Quezon and La Union and, of course, saw the participation of the best surfers from Eastern Samar. The island is bounded in the east by
the Pacific Ocean and in the west by the Leyte Gulf. The island has a rugged landscape, virgin tropical forests, unspoiled white sand beaches, crystal clear water and surf. The place is a haven for adventurous travelers and intrepid surfers.
Calicoan, aside from being the new surfing destination of the country, has a lot of tourism potentials - from unspoiled white sand beaches, natural lagoons to virgin forests. It is a 3- 1/2-hour drive from Tacloban City over well-paved roads.
Today, the people of Guiuan do not only offer their good manners and hospitable behaviors; they also share the beautiful nature God has lovingly showered them with. Their lush and vast splashing waters in Calicoan invite as well a perfect surfing ground for all.
I imagined hearing the collective sigh of relief. Whew! And for most of us without airconditioning, beating the summer heat options quickly point to heading for the malls or to the beach. Heading for the beach is but the quickest and most logical thing to do during summertime. Nothing beats the cool breeze at your face blowing from the bay, offering a much needed respite from the relentless heat.
