Olanggo Island, Bird Sanctuary

When it comes to island hopping, I can almost always hear “Olanggo Island” as being another destination. But it was only last year that I was being able to take a look at how it is in the island. Olanggo Island is just another 15 minute boat ride from Mactan Island. It’s so easy to get there because you’ll only have to drive North, to Mactan, and there’s this beach resort that has sort of a mini-pier where a pump boat leaves for Olanggo at different times. The only thing that gets in the way is that the last trip from Olanggo to Mactan is at 5:30pm, truly a kill-joy. What made me say that is that 5:30 is too early to get back to the real world. Imagine having so much fun with your friends, drinking, singing, dancing or simply just laughing, and then the sun starts to set, and before you know it, you have to clean your mess, pack your bags, and start moving your lousy asses back to the pier. The place in Olanggo that we stayed in wasn’t really what I expected. I was expecting a beach with a sea shore, no matter the color of the sand, but I got my expectations wrong, I guess I was expecting too much for a bird sanctuary. Picture yourself getting ready with your swimwear, not forgetting putting on sunscreen and some tanning lotion, a pair of goggles, and of course your camera, excited for a day’s swim, and then you reach a point where a sign says THIS WAY, with a drawing of a bird pointing where “this way” ‘s way is. And then you get there, disappointed. No beach, no trees, but mangroves, and below the knee level of water. Me and my friends were shouting, but laughing all at the same time, frustrated with what we just saw. But anyway, with our cameras in hand, we decided to just take lots and lots of pictures. We even found a blow fish, half dead, half alive. After our “photoshoot” by the mangroves and everything, we went back to where the rest of our friends were. Some had already too much to drink, some perfectly sober, others in between. We were making too much noise that the one in charge of the area kept on threatening us that he would call the police if we don’t keep things in order. He kept on telling us stories about people committing suicide on the island, which may be true since the place is too peaceful. Too peaceful enough to let you think about so many things, possibly suicide for those who are problematic and depressed. Too peaceful and quiet enough, and really dark, that it’s really possible for someone to try and kill her/himself. Anyway, I cannot say that Olanggo Island is not a place to be because I haven’t seen the entire island yet. Maybe someday I will go back and have a tour around. I’m up for an adventure, who’s with me? J

nice post and funny…i remember the time i went at sta rosa in Olanggo Island…the only things that made it memorable was the people I’m with, food, beer and a lot of beer!..not to mention the itchy skin i had to bear for weeks…

Olanggo island is best to visit during its peak season..you can really see a whole bunch of different species flocking th island! and i think that is during the early summer..
