Olango Island’s treat: Diving sites
Olango Island can be considered as the bird central of the Philippines but this paradise does not only stay on that field. There are actually a lot of diving sites in Cebu that are left undiscovered by many visitors and diving enthusiasts but three of the most visited are located in Olango Island.
Considered the best times in visiting the diving sites in Olango Island is from months November to May.
Mabini Point
A 20-minute banca ride from Mactan Island will take you into the depths of the Mabini Point, where it is situated on the northern tip of the island. One should take a deeper dive since there is little to see on the shallower areas to see those large pelagic. A 35-meter descent into the depths would certainly let you see those Hammerhead Sharks and, at certain parts, the Whaler Sharks.
Statistics include an average depth of about 115 ft to a maximum of 130 and above. Rough and unpredictable currents are present so it’s best for amateur divers to be with experienced divers. Visibility is about 100 ft.
Baring
Up to the northwestern coast of Mabini Point is another dive site Baring. However, just like Mabini, there’s not enough view to see in the shallow areas so a descent of 30-meters is more likely. Creature sightings include barracuda, snappers, surgeonfish, tuna, jacks as well as the Whitetip and Grey Reef sharks. Caves are also worth checking if you increase your descent to 35 meters.
Still present are the rough and rugged currents so, for novice divers, experienced divers are needed for the tour. Average depth is 115ft and 130 ft more for the maximum. Visibility is still 100 ft.
Santa Rosa
Down south of the Mactan Island is where another dive site is located, Santa Rosa. A usual start for diving is with a sandy bottom which is covered in soft corals with a striking beauty that leads to the drop-off of 15 meters then descending to about 50 meters.
A good variety of creature sightings await you in the shallow areas, while if you descend further downwards, you’ll enjoy sights of snappers, sweetlips, jacks, catfish, fusiliers and others.
