Post-Sinulog: going international
Whew. That was some long pause since last week’s post here. Anyway, hope you guys had a good time spending the latest celebration of the year, Sinulog 2008. Well, now I know, 10 days without posting is the longest drought but we all do deserve a break right?
Well, we all know who the winners are in both Sinulog-based and Free Interpretation categories, the Alcoy Siloy Festival from the Municipality of Alcoy, Cebu bested other contingents in the first category while Lumad Basakanon from Cebu City bagged the price for the Free Interpretation. Completing the top five winners for the Free Interpretation category are Municipality of Carmen and three parties outside of Cebu, Alikaraw Organization (Hilongos, Leyte), Tribu Iliganon (Iligan City) and Tribu Pintaflores (San Carlos City). For the Sinulog-based category, the Sinanduloy Dance Troupe (Tangub City), Pakol Festival (Sta. Catalina, Negros), Barangay Lahug and Silaw Culture and Arts Carcar round up the top five.
International contingents
Making it more colorful with a blend of different cultures, the recent Sinulog 2008 featured contingents from Cambodia and Las Vegas, USA. I didn’t actually know this at first until the news came that there were at least 30 Cambodians that have suited up in their native costumes and linked up with a private school in Bogo City, a northern city in Cebu, so that they can reach the number of 60 for the minimum number for a dance contingent. Meanwhile, managers of Sinulog went to Las Vegas and other cities in the United States to study several choreography and composition ideas to share this knowledge to the local choreographers.
Well, aside from discovering more and more styles on how to interpret the festival of Sinulog, more and more contingents from outside Cebu joined in to interpret the festive in their own culture. Among those that have joined are representatives from Camarines Sur of southern Luzon and North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat of Mindanao.
