UV garner honors for Cebu, Visayas and Philippines
Back in high school, I always fancy joining choir groups to know exactly if I can sing. That’s just it; to know if I can sing well. Well, it actually turned out to be a wrong impression for me since I only played the guitar ever since day one. But it turned out great for me and it came to a point when we often talk about joining the latest singing competitions both nationally and internationally.
Fast forward today, there was already a lot of singing groups, school choir or bands that have conquered the music scene. There are those who won prestigious tournaments abroad and have made our country proud as well as the Filipinos. I, myself, am proud to be a Cebuano since there’s a huge number of Cebuano singers who have penetrated the international scene and brought home honors for Cebu and the Philippines.
Take for example the University of the Visayas Chorale.
Busan Choral Festival triumph
The recent Busan Choral Festival held in Busan, South Korea was flocked with 39 choral groups that came from Europe, Asia and America. The University of the Visayas Chorale displayed their overall performance to be adjudged as the “Internationally Very Good”, which is the other title for second place.
The first placer, on the other hand, is another representative of the Philippines, the University of the East. So, either way, Philippines reaped the three honors with its talented representatives.
The UV Chorale, which is consisted of 25 singers, took the silver honors in the ethnic category and also the bronze honor in the classical mixed category. All-out repertoire, enthusiasm and confidence were some of the components that the UV Chorale needs as they performed for the folk/ethnic category, with songs like “Usahay”, “Bahaygi” and “Kinason”. They also sang “Auf Dem See”, “Maghimaya ka Maria”, “Exultapate Iusti In Domino” and “Lihok nga Wala’y Kahangudan” for the classical category.
The Busan Choral Festival was spearheaded by the Korean Choral Institute with judges from Japan, Germany, Sweden, China, Argentina and the Koreans.
Sweet
What made this victory so sweet is that the UV Chorale is actually rookies in terms of international competition compared to the other competitors. They were also the youngest group composed of 15-22 year old singers.
Other than that, both the University of the Visayas and University of the East made significant strides in the international music scene, making not only Cebuanos but also Filipinos, proud.
